ஒரு AI சுவாமியாரின் கடுதாசி…!

(ஆங்காங்கே மானே, தேனே, பொன்மானே போட்டுக் கொள்ளவும்!)

கிறிஸ்துவில் அன்புக்குறிய சகோதர குருக்களுக்கு வணக்கம்!

ஞாயிறு திருப்பலிகள், தவக்கால வழிபாடுகள், தவக்கால தியான முன்னெடுப்புகள், புனித வார தயாரிப்புகள்….etc. ஓ மறந்து விட்டேன் ! – எது விடுபட்டாலும், இதனைத் தவிர்க்க இயலாது 😜 -  ‘தவக்கால திருப்பயண ஏற்பாடுகள்’… இவ்வாறாக, ஆன்மிகப் பணிகள் மற்றும் பங்குப்பணிகளில் ஆழ்ந்து கலைத்திருப்பீர்கள் என நம்புகிறேன். இதற்கிடையில், உங்கள் மறையுரைத் தயாரிப்புகளுக்காக இணையத்திலும், YouTube-லும் நீண்ட நேரம் செலவழித்து சோர்வடைந்திருப்பீர்கள் என்பதையும் நான் அறிவேன். ‘பாம்பின் கால் பாம்பறியும்’ 😏

இதற்கிடையில், எனது தாழ்மையான வேண்டுகோள்! 🤌🙏 தங்களின் பொன்னான 3 Reels பார்க்கும் நேரத்தை மட்டும் இந்தக் கடிதத்தை படிக்க ஒதுக்குங்கள். டிஜிட்டல் யுகத்தில், ஒரு AI சுவாமியாராக, என் மனதில் தோன்றிய சில எண்ணங்களை கிறுக்கியிருக்கிறேன். ✍ நிச்சயம் பயனளிக்கும்.

2011-ல் நான் ஒரு குருமாணவனாக, கோயம்புத்தூர் துறவிகள் ஆசிரமத்தில் இருந்த போது, "ஆன்மிகப் புரட்சி" என்ற நாடகம் ஒன்றை எழுதி இயக்கினேன். அதில், எதிர்காலத்தில் தொழில்நுட்பம் நம் ஆன்மிக வாழ்வில் முக்கியப் பங்கு வகிக்கும் என்றும், நம் திருப்பலிகள் தொலைக்காட்சியில் ஒளிபரப்பப்படும் என்றும் (நற்கருணை அஞ்சலில் வந்து சேரும் என்று கூட ஒரு அலாதி கற்பனை – கொஞ்சம் ஓவரா தன் போயிட்டமோ? இளம் இரத்தம் அப்படித்தான் யோசிக்கும்! - மன்னிச்சுசூ...! 🤭); இவ்வாறாக, கற்பனைகள் கலந்த ஒரு குறுநாடகம் அது. அப்போது, என் கருத்துக்கள் மிகவும் அதிரடியாகவும், மரபுகளுக்கு எதிராகவும் இருப்பதாக பலரின் விமர்சனத்திற்கு ஆளானேன். ஒரு 15 வருடம் fast forward செய்யுங்கள்… சொய்ங்க்…2025 - ஆனால், இன்று நாம் எங்கிருக்கிறோம்! கொரொனா தொற்று நோய்க்குப் பிறகு, ஆன்லைன் வழிபாடுகளை நாம் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டோம். ஒரு காலத்தில் சாத்தியமில்லை என்று நினைத்தது, இன்று நம் வாழ்வில் ஒரு பகுதியாகிவிட்டது.

YouTube ஒரு ஊடகம் மட்டுமே!

இன்று, YouTube-இல் நம் திருப்பலிகளுக்கும், பாடல்களுக்கும், மறையுரைகளுக்கும் குறைவில்லை. தந்தை மகன் தூய ஆவி - யை பரங்கி மலையில் தொடங்கி, வாசகங்களை அச்சிறுப்பாக்கத்தில் வாசித்து, ஆயர் ராயப்பாவின் மறையுரையை சேலத்தில் கேட்டு, மைய திருப்பலியை புரியாத பிரெஞ்சு மொழியில் - லூர்து மாதா கெபியில் கலந்து கொண்டு, மாதாப்பாடலுக்கு வேளாங்கண்ணிக்கு வந்து, கொடியேற்றத்தையும் பார்த்து விட முடிகிறது; Only Holy communion is missing; What a variety – instead of seeing the face of the same priest from beginning to end – Isn’t it? Jokes apart…!

நண்பர்களே, YouTube நிரந்தரமானது அல்ல என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்ளுங்கள். இது ஒரு ஊடகம் மட்டுமே. நாம் கேட்க வேண்டிய கேள்வி இதுதான்: நம் திறமை எங்கே உள்ளது? ஊடக தரத்தில், மறுமலர்ச்சி கிறிஸ்தவ சபையினருடன் ஒப்பிடும் போது, நமது தரமும், பார்வையீடும் எந்தளவில் இருக்கிறது? They are well advanced… to cater to the evolving generations. திருப்பலிகளையும், மறையுரைகளையும் மட்டும் ஒளிபரப்பி எவ்வளவு காலம் தொடர முடியும்? மாதாத் தொலைக்காட்சியின் Youtube Channel கூட 287K subscribers-யைத் தாண்டவில்லையே? முதியவர்கள், உடல்நலம் சரியில்லாதவர்கள் தவிர, வேறு யார் இதிலிருந்து பயன் பெறுகிறார்கள்?

நாம் அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்கு நகர வேண்டிய நேரம் இது. ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தனித்துவமான திறமைகள் உள்ளன. உதாரணமாக, YouTube-இல் பிரபலமான Fr. ஆல்பர்ட், அவரது மறையுரைகளில் நகைச்சுவைவையைப் புகுத்துகிறார். அது அவருக்காக இறைவன் கொடுத்த தனித்திறமை; ஊழியத்தில் அது அவருக்கு கை கொடுக்கிறது. அவரைப் போல ஒவ்வொருவரும் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதல்ல – It’s his special gift of God.

நம் சமுதாயத்திற்கு ஏற்ற புதிய அணுகுமுறைகளை நாம் கண்டுபிடிக்க வேண்டும். கடவுள் நமக்குக் கொடுத்த அந்த தனிவரம் "தாலந்து" என்ன என்பதை நாம் கண்டறிய வேண்டும். Don’t say ‘Preaching’- it’s our duty and responsibility. அதைத் தாண்டி, ஏதாவது புதுயுக்திகள் என்னுள் புதைந்திருக்கிறதா என தோண்டிப்பார்க்க வேண்டும். தகுதியில்லாது சோம்பேறியாய் இருந்த வேலையாளுக்கும், ஒரு ‘தாலந்து’ கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. புதைந்திருக்கும் இத்தாலந்துகளை தொண்டி கண்டிறிவதற்கும், இரட்டிப்பாக்குவதற்கும் ஒரு புதிய வாய்ப்பு வந்துள்ளது. Get ready folks…!

AI சிந்தனையைத் தூண்டுகிறது

பொதுவெளியில் நிலவும் கருத்துப்படி, AI மனித சிந்தனையின் படைப்பாற்றலை அழிக்கும் என்று நீங்கள் நினைக்கிறீர்களா? என் அனுபவத்தைப் பகிர்கிறேன். நீங்கள் இப்போது படிக்கும் இந்தக் கடிதம், உங்கள் கவனத்தை இதுவரை ஈர்த்து தக்கவைத்திருக்கிதென்றால், இது ஒரு வகையான படைப்பாற்றல் அல்லவா?

உண்மையில் இக்கடிதம் AI-இன் உதவி கொண்டு எழுதப்பட்டது.

இது உண்மையில் ஒரு Scientific Research Ariticle என்றால் உங்களால் நம்பமுடிகிறதா? AI-யின் தாக்கத்தைப் பற்றிய ஒரு ஆராய்ச்சி கட்டுரையாகத் தான் முதலில் உருவாக்கினேன் (Read the the article - References are attached in the English version, below). திடீரென்று ஒரு யோசனை – ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரையை நிச்சயம் யாரும் படிக்கப்போவதில்லை. நீங்கள் படித்திருப்பீர்களா?  சரி, ஒரு கடிதமாய் எழுதினால் என்ன? புதிய யோசனை, நலம்! – ஆனால் முழுவதுமாக மாற்றி எழுத எவ்வளவு நேரமாகும்; நினைக்கும் போதே மலைப்பல்லவா?  உண்மை என்னவென்றால், ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரை எழுத எடுத்த நேரம் 4 நிமிடங்கள்; அதிலிருந்து கடிதம் வரைய 3 நிமிடங்கள். But, It is not perfect; you need to edit, refine and present. (இதனை சுவைபட மேம்படுத்த 4 மணி நேரமானது என்பது வேறு கதை 😜)

AI-ஐப் பயன்படுத்துவதால், என் எண்ணங்களை சுதந்திரமாக வெளிப்படுத்த முடிகிறது. தரவுகளைச் சேகரிப்பதில் அல்லது வாக்கியங்களை வடிவமைப்பதில் நேரத்தை வீணாக்காமல், என் படைப்பாற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்த முடிகிறது. ஒரு புதிய சிந்தனையை படைப்பாக மாற்றுவது குறித்த உடல் மற்றும் சிந்தனை உழைப்பு குறித்த மலைப்பு இல்லை, அச்சம் இல்லை; எந்த ஒரு புதிய சிந்தனையையும், உடனடியாக செயல்படுத்தி பார்த்துவிட முடிகிறது. What you need is only creativity & ideas – AI will take care of all other logical works of gathering, consolidating, framing, etc. மேலும், நாம் அச்சிட்டு ஊடகத்தைத் தாண்டிய சிந்தனைகளுக்கு கடந்து செல்ல வேண்டிய நிர்பந்தத்தில் இருக்கிறோம் என்பதனையும் உணர வேண்டிய தருணம் இது.

மறையுரை தயாரிப்பு, உள்ளடக்கம் உருவாக்குதல் போன்றவற்றை விரைவுபடுத்த AI-ஐப் பயன்படுத்தினால், நமது ஆன்மிக & சமூக முன்னேற்றப் பணிகளுக்கு அதிக நேரம் கிடைக்கும். Imagine – You have an expert Scripture scholar, an expert Canonist, an expert Catechist, an expert Moral theologian, etc… what else you can think of in the world – it’s all within your pocket - in your mobile phone. இத்தனை நுண்ணறிவையும் நான் மனித அறிவைக் கொண்டு நானே தேடி, தொகுப்பதில் எவ்வளவு நேரம் மற்றும் உழைப்பு தேவைப்படுகிறது; சாத்தியமானதுதானா?

இவை என் மனதில் தோன்றிய சில எண்ணங்கள் மட்டுமே. இப்பொழுது நாம் பார்த்தது, எழுத்துத் துறையில் - AI குறித்த ஒரு சிறு கண்ணோட்டம் மட்டுமே. There are many more, like hymns, music generation, Video making, Qizzes, Interactive Avatars, Researches, many more and countless. இப்படியாக, எனது சிறுமூளையில், 3 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் முன் உதயமான ஒரு புதிய கண்ணோட்டம் தான் தமிழ் கத்தோலிக்கப் பாடல்களுக்கென ஒரு Karaoke Channel – வெற்றிசைப்பாடல். நான் சொன்னது போன்று, எனது சிற்றிவுக்கு எட்டிய ஒரு சிறு முயற்சி இது. நாம் அனைவரும் செயற்கை நுண்ணறிவுத் தொழில்நுட்பத்தை (AI) முடிந்த வரை, அவரவர் தளங்களில் பயன்படுத்தத் தொடங்கினால், எண்ணற்ற புதிய கண்ணோட்டங்கள் மற்றும் தரவுகள் உருவாகும்; ஏனென்றால் ஒவ்வொருவரின் நிபுனத்துவமும், அனுபவமும். படைப்பாற்றல் திறனும் தனித்துவமானது, வேறுபட்டது, ஒப்பிடவியலாது. இன்னும் பல புதிய படைப்பாற்றல் வாய்ப்புகளின் கதவுகள் திறக்கும்.

தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்வியின் தேவை

நான் சிறுவனாக இருக்கும் போது, நான் பார்த்த பங்குத் தந்தையர்கள் வெறும் ‘திருப்பலி நிறைவேற்றும் பூசாரி’ யாக இல்லை. அவர் தான் மருத்துவர், அவர் தான் சட்ட வல்லுநர், அவர் தான் அறிவியல் வளர்ச்சிகளை அறிந்தவர், அவர் தான் உளவியல் அறிஞர். எந்த பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் பங்குத்தந்தையின் வழிகாட்டுதலின்றி செய்ய முடிந்ததில்லை. அக்கால முன்னோர்களின் கல்வியறிவு குறைவு என்றாலும் கூட, தற்கால சமுதாய வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஏற்ப நாமும் வளர்ந்திருக்க வேண்டாமா?

இது இப்படியிருக்க, இதற்கு முரணாக, மின்னஞ்சல் கூட பயன்படுத்தத் தெரியாத சில இளம் குருக்களை நான் பார்க்கும் போது பரிதாபமாயிருக்கிறது; வருத்தமளிக்கிறது. நமது குருத்துவ பயிற்சி முறையை குறித்து மறுபரிசீலனை செய்ய வேண்டிய நேரம் இது.

நமது வருடக் கணக்கான, குருத்துவ பயிற்சி இப்புதிய சமுதாயம் வளரும் பாதையில் கூட்டிச் செல்ல வேண்டும், மாறாக காலாவதியான மரபுகளுக்குள் முடக்கி விடக்கூடாது. நாம் இதே அணுகுமுறையைத் தொடர்ந்தால், 8–15 வருடப் பயிற்சிக்குப் பிறகு, சமுதாயத்திற்குப் பொருந்தாத இறை ஊழியர்களை உருவாக்கும் அபாயம் உள்ளது. தொழில்நுட்ப அறிவு குருத்துவக் கல்வியின் ஒருங்கிணைந்த பகுதியாக மாற வேண்டும். ஐந்து ஆண்டுகளில் உலகம் கற்பனை செய்ய முடியாத அளவிற்கு மாறிவிடும்; நாம் இப்போது தயாராகவில்லை என்றால், நாம் பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளப்படுவோம் – Our future priests may become irrelevant to that AI-Society.

அதனால்தான், எங்களது முதல் வருட பயிற்சி மாணவர்களுக்கு சமையல் முதல் AI வரை பல்வேறு தொழில்நுட்பங்களின் அடிப்படை பயன்பாட்டை நான் முதலில் பயிற்சி அளிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன்; ஊக்குவித்தேன். அவர்கள் AI அறிவு பெற்றவர்கள் மற்றும் எல்லாவற்றின் அடிப்படைகளையும் அறிந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்று பெருமையுடன் கூற முடியும். அவர்களுக்குப் பயன்படுத்த வாய்ப்பு கொடுங்கள், நாம் நினைப்பதை விட அதிகமாக அவர்கள் வளர்வார்கள். புரிந்துகொள்ளுங்கள் - மொழி என்பது இனி ஒரு திறமை அல்ல – மாறாக, அவர்களை உலகத் திறன்களில் தயார்படுத்துங்கள்.

ஆன்மிகத்தை அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்கு எடுத்துச் செல்வோம்!

அறிக, AI என்பது Chat-GPT மட்டுமல்ல. அது ஒரு கருவி மட்டுமே. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான புதிய கருவிகள் உருவாகின்றன. AI நமக்கு பல புதிய வாய்ப்புகளை வழங்குகிறது:

• படைப்பாற்றல் உருவாக்கம்: திருப்பலிகளை ஒளிபரப்புவதைத் தாண்டி, திருவிவிலிய ஆய்வுகள், குழந்தைகளுக்கான கதைகள், குறும்படங்கள், சிறப்புத் தேவைகளுக்கான ஆன்மிக உள்ளடக்கம், (possibilities are endless) ஆகியவற்றை உருவாக்கலாம்.

• தனிப்பயன் அணுகுமுறை: நம் சமுதாயத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள AI-ஐப் பயன்படுத்தி, அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற திட்டங்களை உருவாக்கலாம்.

• திறன்: நிர்வாகப் பணிகளையும், ஆய்வுகளையும் AI-யிடம் ஒப்படைத்துவிட்டு, உறவுகளை வளர்ப்பதிலும், ஆன்மிகத் தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்வதிலும் கவனம் செலுத்தலாம்.

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையின் புதுமை ஏற்கும் மரபு

வரலாற்றில், கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபை புதிய தொழில்நுட்பங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில் முன்னணியில் இருந்து வந்துள்ளது. அச்சு இயந்திரம் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டபோது, விவிலியத்தை உலகெங்கும் பரப்ப அதைப் பயன்படுத்தினோம். வானொலி, தொலைக்காட்சி வந்தபோது, அவற்றை நற்செய்தி அறிவிக்கப் பயன்படுத்தினோம் - பேராயர் ஃபுல்ட்டன் ஷீன் இதன் முன்னோடி. திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ், சமூக ஊடகங்களை அன்பையும், நம்பிக்கையையும் பரப்ப இன்றளவும் பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

இப்போது AI நம் முன் உள்ளது. இது நம் ஆன்மிகத்தை அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்கு எடுத்துச் செல்லத் தயாராக உள்ளது. இது நாம் செய்யும் செயல்களை மாற்றாது, மேம்படுத்தும்.

AI நம் ஆன்மிகத்தில் என்ன செய்ய முடியும்?

• மறையுரை & ஆன்மீகச் சொற்பொழிவு தயாரிப்பு: திருவிவிலியம் மற்றும் திருச்சபை ஆவணங்களை விரைவாக ஆய்வு செய்து, அர்த்தமுள்ள மறையுரைகளை உருவாக்கலாம். (மறையுரைக்காக வார இதழ்களிலும், Whatsapp Group-லும், சிறுகதைகளைத் தேட வேண்டாம் 😜 – AI will create relevant stories for you)

• தனிப்பயன் ஆன்மிகப் பராமரிப்பு: நம் பணிசெய்ய்யும் சூழலைப் புரிந்துகொண்டு, அவர்களின் தேவைகளை அடையாளம் காணலாம்.

• நற்செய்தி அறிவித்தல்: புதிய பார்வையாளர்களை அடையவும், சமூக ஊடகங்களில் அவர்களுடன் தொடர்புகொள்ளவும் உதவும்.

• 24/7 ஆதரவு: எந்த நேரத்திலும் கேள்விகளுக்குப் பதிலளிக்கவும், ஜெபங்களை வழங்கவும் AI உதவியாளர்களைப் பயன்படுத்தலாம்.

ஆனால், நம் நோக்கத்திற்கு உண்மையாக இருக்க வேண்டும்

AI புதிய வாய்ப்புகளை வழங்கினாலும், நாம் கவனமாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.

• சடங்குகளின் புனிதத்தன்மை: எந்த விதமான AI-Algorithm-ம், நம் தனித்துவமான அருளைடையாளங்களின் புனிதத்தையும், அதனால் கடவுளிடமிருந்து பெறும் அருளையும் மாற்ற முடியாது. They are just machines & tools!

• இறைவார்த்தையின் அடிப்படைத் தூய்மை: AI கருவிகள் திருச்சபையின் போதனைகளுக்கு ஏற்ப இருக்க வேண்டும். You can not use them as they produce; you need to personally verify and personalize & theologise.

• மனித தொடர்பு: தொழில்நுட்பம் தனிப்பட்ட மனித உறவுகளை மாற்றக்கூடாது, மேம்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

நாம் எப்படி தயாராகலாம்?

• AI மற்றும் டிஜிட்டல் கல்வியை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள். Become AI Literate!

• கலப்பின (Hybrid) ஆன்மிக மாதிரியை உருவாக்குங்கள்.

• "இந்த தொழில்நுட்பம் என் சமுதாயத்தின் ஆன்மிகத் தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்கிறதா?" என்று கேளுங்கள்.

• அனுபவங்களைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். கற்றறிந்த தொழில்நுட்ப அறிவை, பிற சக குருக்களுக்கும் கற்பியுங்கள்.

ஒரு அழைப்பு

அன்புள்ள சகோதரர்களே, இன்னும் வெகு சில நாட்களில், குருத்துவப் பணி எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால், AI நல்லதா? கெட்டதா? / சரியானதா? தவறானதா? என்பதல்ல தற்போதைய விவாதம். உலகம் ஏற்கெனவே அந்த யுகத்தில் நுழைந்துவிட்டது. "தகுதி உள்ளவர்களே" வாழ்வார்கள் (Survival of the fittest). நீங்கள் தகுதி இல்லாத வீரராக இருந்தால், உங்கள் எதிரிகளுடன் எப்படிப் போராட முடியும்?

AI Intelligence Day

To: All my brother priests

Hi, my brother priests in christ,

Hope you are fine. I think you are exhausted after whole day of Sunday services, Lenten retreat arrangements, Lenten Pilgrimage (has become more inevitable than other aspects, these days 😜), besides stealing time for surfing through the internet and YouTube for your sermon preparations 😏.

🤌🙏Spare me your precious 3-reels watching time to go through this personal letter from me. I wanted to share some thoughts that have been on my mind lately, especially as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of ministry in our digital age ✍. You will surely benefit!

Let me take you back to my postulancy days in 2011. I remember writing and directing a skit “Spiritual Revolution” that envisioned the future of the Church—a world where our Masses would be telecast on television, (distribution of communion through courier – that was too much of course 🤭) engaging church animations, and technology playing a central role in our spiritual lives. Back then, I faced some serious criticism from my formators for those ideas—many thought they were too radical and contrary to our traditions. But look at us now! We’ve adapted to online ministries, especially during the pandemic, and what once seemed far-fetched is now part of our everyday reality.

YouTube Is Just a Medium

Now, most of us are flocking to platforms like YouTube, which has become our go-to for sharing the Gospel. But let me remind you—YouTube / FB is not forever; it’s just a medium. Even as we embrace this tool, we need to ask ourselves: Where is the professionalism? Compare the quality and viewership of our content with other denominations. What is our quality? How long can we keep telecasting only the Eucharistic celebrations and Adorations on YouTube? Apart from the elderly and bedridden, who else is truly benefiting from this?

It’s time for us to take things to the next level! Our Gospel sharing cannot be limited to just Mass telecasting and sermon preaching. Some priests have unique gifts that allow them to adapt their talents creatively in ministry. Take Fr. Albert, for example—a popular priest on YouTube who blends humor with preaching. His ability to connect through fun and engaging content is inspiring, but it’s not something every priest can replicate.

What we need are creative approaches tailored to each of us. It’s a call within our call – you need to find out, what is that ‘Denari’ God has blessed you with. Even to the undeserving servant, the Master gave one ‘Dinari’. And how do we multiply those, Denaris? And, this is where AI comes in—it’s a powerful tool that can help us unlock new possibilities for ministry.

AI Sparks Creativity

Do you think AI is brain-rotting the creative ability of human thinking. Let me share my own experience with AI. If you are reading this letter till now, it has caught your attention with some kind of interesting content and creativity, hasn’t it? It actually started as a spark of thought from conversation with my companion Fr. Julius about writing a scientific Article on AI’s impact in church ministry (read the article). But as I began researching and brainstorming ideas, I realized, why not I transform those thoughts into this letter format (imagine this as a scientific paper – you would have not even opened it, Am I right?) It all happened within an hour! Can you believe it? (Of course it needs refinement - I spent 4 hours on beautifying the content). If I had relied on traditional research methods, it would have taken days or weeks—and by then, I might have lost interest entirely.

The beauty of using AI is that it gives me the freedom to think outside the box without getting bogged down in collecting data or formatting sentences. My AI assistant takes care of all those logical tasks, allowing my creativity to flow freely.

Imagine how much more effective we could be if we used AI tools to streamline tasks like sermon preparation or content creation—freeing up time for pastoral care and personal connection. In this line of thought, three years ago I came up with a little spark of idea of a channel using AI for Tamil Catholic Karaokes - Vetrisaipadal. These are only some ignition points my little mind could think of; you may come up with many more creative explorations, once you dive into the AI ocean.

The Need for Technological Literacy

Here’s something that deeply concerns me: I’ve come across some of my own immediate junior priests who don’t even know how to use email! It’s heartbreaking because I foresee a struggling future for such technology-illiterate priests. And honestly, I can only blame our formation process for this gap.

Formation should facilitate growth—not reserve it within outdated traditions in the name of formation. If we continue with the same approach, after 8–15 years of formation, we risk producing ministers who are irrelevant to society. Technology literacy must become an integral part of seminary education. Within five years, the world will be unimaginable; if we don’t prepare now, we’ll be left behind. That’s why I first started training our First-year candidates with the basic utilization of various technologies from Cooking, Electrical & Plumbing to AI; I can proudly say that they AI literate and they know the basics of everything. Give them opportunity to utilize, they will grow more than what we can think of. Understand, language is no more a skill – instead make them equipped in skills of the world.

Taking Ministry to the Next Level

AI is not just Chat-GPT; it’s not just another smart browsing tool – Please come out from that illusion. Chat-GPT is one of the tools – it took the first mover advantage; therefore, it is widely popular. 100s of tools are evolving every day. And honestly no one knows where it is going to land; that’s why all the big corporates are madly investing on this, to become the BOSS – as we find google today. It’s a big competition that’s happening.

Leave it – for our case, AI offers us opportunities beyond what we’ve imagined so far:

• Creative Content: Move beyond telecasting Masses—create interactive Bible studies, storytelling sessions for children, or virtual retreats tailored to specific needs.

• Personalized Outreach: Use AI analytics to understand your congregation better and create targeted programs that resonate deeply with them.

• Efficiency: Let AI handle administrative tasks or research assistance so you can focus on what matters most—building relationships and serving souls.

The Church’s Legacy of Innovation

Throughout history, the Catholic Church has been a trailblazer in embracing new ideas and technologies. When the printing press was invented, we used it to spread the Bible far and wide. When radio and television emerged, we embraced them as tools for evangelization. Pope Francis himself has shown us how social media can amplify our message of hope and love.

Now we have AI on our doorstep, ready to help us take our ministry to the next level. This isn’t about replacing what we do; it’s about enhancing it—making our work more efficient and impactful.

AI’s Potential in Our Ministry

So what can AI do for us? Here are some exciting possibilities:

• Homily Preparation: Imagine having tools that analyze Scripture and Church documents quickly, helping you craft meaningful homilies while saving time for prayer and reflection.

• Personalized Pastoral Care: AI can help us understand our congregations better by analyzing attendance patterns and preferences. This insight allows us to tailor our outreach efforts and ensure no one feels overlooked.

• Evangelization: AI can help us reach new audiences through targeted communication on social media platforms, creating content that resonates with seekers online.

• 24/7 Support: Picture having virtual assistants available to provide pastoral support at any hour—whether it’s answering questions or offering prayers—ensuring that no one feels abandoned in their spiritual journey.

Staying True to Our Mission

While AI offers exciting possibilities, we must approach it thoughtfully and ensure it aligns with our mission as priests:

• Sacramental Integrity: Remember that no algorithm can replace your unique role as a priest in administering sacraments in persona Christi.

• Doctrinal Fidelity: Any AI tools we use must align with Magisterial teachings—no shortcuts or compromises here!

• Human Connection: Technology should never replace personal relationships; it should enhance them. We are called to be shepherds who care for souls, not just data points.

By grounding our use of AI in these principles, we can navigate its complexities while remaining true to our mission.

How Can We Prepare?

As we move forward into this new era, here are some steps we can take together:

• Embrace AI & Digital Literacy

Let’s commit ourselves to learning about AI and its applications in ministry. Understanding how these tools work will empower us to use them wisely and responsibly.

• Adopt Hybrid Ministry Models

The pandemic has shown us that online engagement is here to stay. Let’s become comfortable blending physical presence with digital tools—it’s not an either/or situation; it’s both/and!

• Engage in Ethical Discernment

Always ask yourself: “Is this technology serving my congregation’s spiritual needs? Does it align with Catholic values?” If not, let’s rethink how we’re using it.

• Share Experiences

Let’s create spaces where we can share insights about technology in ministry—whether through diocesan workshops or informal gatherings. Together, we can learn from one another and grow stronger as a community.

Enough theories; let me wind up!

Dear fellow priests, the priestly ministry soon is not going to be the same what we have experienced so for. It is not whether AI is GOOD or BAD. The world has already entered that era. Now it is only “Survival of the fittest.” Are you worried about Hindu fundamentalism like RSS and so on. AI illiteracy is more worrying than that. When you are unqualified player, how can you fight against your opponent?
